19th Century Mahogany Campaign Shelves

A well-proportioned mahogany campaign shelving unit of architectural form, the pedimented top centred by a cast brass rosette and terminating in turned brass finials.

The three graduated shelves retain their original brass edging, a practical feature designed to protect the timber during transport and use. The brass mounts are of matching design and display a mellow, undisturbed patina, with light wear to the shelf lips consistent with handling.

Raised on small brass feet, allowing the piece to sit securely atop a campaign chest or similar, while also suitable for wall mounting.

Campaign furniture was developed for British military officers and travellers during the 18th and 19th centuries, designed to be portable, durable, and practical in often challenging environments. Pieces were constructed to be dismantled or stacked for transport, while retaining the proportions and refinement of domestic furniture.

Shelving units of this type were typically used in conjunction with campaign chests, forming a compact and adaptable storage system for books, instruments, and personal effects.

Very good antique condition, with minor surface wear and handling marks in keeping with age. The timber retains a rich, warm tone and the brass an even patina.

A particularly attractive and usable example, combining functionality with restrained classical detailing. Ideal for displaying books, objects, or small works of art.
