19th Century Oil on Canvas Portrait of a Capuchin Monk, after Rubens

A powerful head-and-shoulders study of a bearded Capuchin monk, painted after the manner of Peter Paul Rubens against a deep, richly worked dark ground. The sitter’s face emerges dramatically from shadow, illuminated by the warm raking light characteristic of the Flemish Baroque tradition.
