19th Century Painting of a Bay Horse

A mid-19th-century oil on canvas depicting a bay horse in profile within an open landscape, tethered beneath a tree with distant hills beyond.

The composition and handling are closely associated with the British sporting tradition of the period, particularly the work of William Garland and the Ferneley circle, with the horse set prominently against a broad expanse of pale blue sky and softly rendered landscape.

The painting retains extensive age-related craquelure and a pleasing historic surface, with particularly attractive chestnut tones to the horse and cooler blues through the sky and distant landscape.

Presented in a period gilt frame. The reverse retains its aged canvas and stretcher, together with an indistinct handwritten inscription in blue.
