A late 19th century charcoal academic study after the antique, depicting a classical plaster cast fragment of crossed feet upon a stepped socle.
Executed with strong tonal modelling and soft atmospheric handling characteristic of the South Kensington Schools system, the drawing retains both its E.S.K. stamp and handwritten student attribution to Annie Whitcher, numbered 1376.
Studies of this kind formed part of the rigorous antique-room training that defined British academic art education during the latter part of the 19th century, where students worked directly from plaster casts of classical sculpture to develop draughtsmanship, proportion and tonal control.
Mounted within its period gilt frame.
