Circa 1840–1850
A most attractive mid-19th century English corner table of Neo-Classical inspiration, the triangular top painted to simulate Siena marble, above a shallow frieze decorated with a Greek key meander painted in ochre and gold tones against an imitated coromandel ground.
The frieze is centred at the upper angles with stylised classical lion masks, and the table is raised on three turned and ringed supports. The frieze, supports, sides, back, and conforming undertier are entirely faux-grained in imitation of coromandel wood, the undertier centred at the angles with painted classical rosettes.
Entirely hand-painted and retaining its original painted surface throughout, with attractive patination and surface wear consistent with age. The table survives in original condition, without later repainting or restoration, and retains the visual richness and theatrical character typical of the period.
English, circa 1840–1850.
