Continental, circa 1900–1930
An exceptional and unusually substantial hanging brazier of neoclassical inspiration, believed to be cast bronze, retaining a richly patinated reddish-brown surface with contrasting gilt ornament.
The deeply modelled hemispherical vessel is decorated with bold classical fluting and stylised geometric motifs, recalling the monumental bronze furnishings and architectural ornament of ancient Rome. Three substantial, architecturally conceived brackets support heavy, angular-link suspension chains, rising to a corresponding ornamental ceiling canopy. The underside terminates in a finely cast, acorn-shaped pendant finial enriched with foliate detailing.
Of particular interest is the marriage of classical form with an emerging modernist vocabulary. The restrained Roman-inspired proportions and architectural ornament are juxtaposed with sharply defined geometric decoration, suggestive of the transition from nineteenth-century neoclassicism towards the more stylised language of Art Deco.
