Individually worked masonry, weathered column shafts, distressed capitals and a fragmentary entablature reproduce the architectural character and accumulated decay of the ancient monument. The inscribed frieze bears the historic dedication recording the temple’s restoration by the Roman Senate and People following a fire.

The Temple of Saturn, one of the oldest sacred buildings in the Roman Forum, was traditionally founded in 497 BC and served not only as a place of worship but also as the repository of the Roman state’s treasury. Its surviving remains, substantially associated with a late-antique rebuilding, became a familiar subject for artists, architects and antiquarians visiting Rome.

During the eighteenth century, architectural models fashioned from cork became highly prized among Grand Tour collectors. The material’s naturally porous texture lent itself particularly well to the representation of ancient masonry and weathered stone. Among the most accomplished practitioners was Antonio Chichi (1743–1816), whose extraordinarily detailed models of Roman antiquities were acquired by distinguished European collectors and institutions.

Handcrafted using traditional modelling techniques, the present work draws upon this distinguished tradition, celebrating both the architectural grandeur of ancient Rome and the picturesque beauty of its surviving ruins.

Contemporary

Handcrafted natural cork and plaster with pigments
40cm x 40cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0633/9801/9304/files/B9CCEA4A-05AE-46E1-8DB3-2835C84791CD.jpg?v=1793197467
https://michaeltreasureantiques.com/products/an-architectural-cork-model-of-the-temple-of-saturn-roman-forum-rome
