An early 19th century trompe-l’œil still life of letters and travel sketches, dated 1834.
Painted in watercolour and gouache on paper, the composition depicts a small arrangement of correspondence, sketches and personal objects scattered upon a marble surface. A landscape study of romantic ruins set beside a lake with distant mountains lies at the centre, surrounded by handwritten notes, an engraved view of a castle, a wax-sealed letter and a pair of red-hearted cards. A key and pencil are painted with convincing shadow, creating the illusion that these objects rest upon the surface.
The composition hints at the Romantic fascination with continental travel and picturesque ruins during the early nineteenth century.
A charming example of the trompe-l’œil tradition, intended to deceive the eye through carefully observed light and shadow.
Dated 1834.
