Italian, 19th Century

A table of exceptional decorative appeal, this continental specimen wood side table exemplifies 19th-century Italian marquetry workshops, likely active in the Sorrento region. The circular top is inlaid with a compass rose design, radiating outward in segments of exotic and indigenous timbers.

Featuring an array of carefully chosen specimen woods, including rosewood, olivewood, satinwood, walnut burl, birdseye maple, sycamore, laburnum, ebony, elm and others. The exceptional veneering is framed within a shallow moulded edge and supported on a turned column with ring moulding, raised on triform legs, terminating on shaped feet.

To the underside is an inscribed number, No.2, alongside a rare surviving label, hand-scripted and possibly reading P. Tringario, suggesting a named artisan or workshop origin.

Of good, small proportions, good sofa table or bedside.
