A charming 19th-century watercolour depicting a quiet Venetian canal with a gondola moored at the doorway of a small canal-side house, while another gondolier navigates the waterway beyond. Warm terracotta roofs and sunlit façades are reflected in the canal beneath a clear blue sky, capturing the everyday atmosphere of Venice.
Executed with confident, economical brushwork typical of travel studies produced during artistic journeys through Italy, the work retains the immediacy of a scene observed directly from life.
The reverse bears an old inscription describing the subject as “Casetta Persico with gondola at the door – drawing from a primo piano.”
Watercolour and gouache on paper.
A particularly attractive and decorative Venetian view by George Sherwood Hunter (1846–1919), capturing the timeless charm of the city’s smaller canals.
