Grand Tour Alabaster Model of the Baptistery of San Giovanni, Pisa.
Italian, c.1840–1860
A finely carved mid 19th century Grand Tour architectural model of the Baptistery of San Giovanni, Pisa, executed in translucent Tuscan alabaster and retaining exceptional crispness to the Romanesque and Gothic detailing. The model is constructed in three sections; base, drum and dome following traditional Florentine workshop practice, allowing the architectural articulation to be fully expressed.
Minor losses to the upper cresting, entirely typical of alabaster models of this period and attest to the object’s age and handling history.
Models of the Pisa Baptistery were popular souvenirs for travellers visiting Tuscany from the mid-18th century onward, but larger examples of this scale are comparatively scarce
