An Egyptian Revival obelisk decorated on all four sides with hieroglyphic relief panels, raised on a stepped architectural plinth and set with a circular medallion to the base. The tapering shaft is arranged in the traditional Egyptian manner with vertical registers of hieroglyphs and figural motifs inspired by ancient temple inscriptions.

Small cabinet-scale obelisks of this type were produced throughout the 19th century during the height of European Egyptomania, following renewed scholarly and popular fascination with ancient Egypt. In particular, the erection of the ancient Luxor Obelisk in Paris in 1836 sparked widespread interest in Egyptian monuments and led to the production of numerous decorative and scholarly souvenirs for collectors, travellers, and antiquarians.

With its dark patinated metal surface and crisply cast hieroglyphic decoration, the piece has a strong architectural presence despite its modest scale, making it an excellent desk ornament or cabinet curiosity in the tradition of the Grand Tour interior.

A striking example of 19th-century Egyptological taste and the enduring European fascination with the monuments of the Nile.
