French, late 19th century
A well-modelled plaster cast of the celebrated Nike of Samothrace, one of the most iconic sculptures of the ancient world. The figure is shown as preserved in the original marble, with its head and arms absent, the focus falling instead on the extraordinary movement of the drapery.
The wind-swept folds cling and billow across the body, creating a powerful sense of motion and giving the figure its unmistakable presence. This example is particularly well handled, with deep, fluid carving to the drapery typical of high-quality French academic casts of the late 19th century.
The base retains an incised workshop inscription, consistent with French atelier production.
Originally produced for academic study, casts of this kind were also collected and displayed in interiors inspired by the Grand Tour.
