Late 19th Century Plaster Bust of a Young Woman - Brucciani & Co.

A large modelled plaster cast of a classical female head, traditionally identified as a young goddess a possibly Artemis. Her downward gaze and bound hair, drawn back in a broad fillet, typical of Hellenistic interpretations of youthful deities.

This bust reproduces a head broken from a full-length statue discovered at Hadrian’s Villa in 1769 by the Scottish antiquarian and excavator Gavin Hamilton. The original marble, thought to be an image of Artemis or another youthful Olympian, reflects the refined aesthetic cultivated in the imperial court of Hadrian at Tivoli.

This example is a late 19th-century, stamped D. Brucciani & Co. bearing model number 2886. Detailed by Brucciani as “Girl” found in Hadrians Villa, 1769.
