Grand Tour Bronze Models of the Temple of Hercules Victor, Rome
A fine 19th-century Grand Tour bronze models depicting the Temple of Hercules Victor, situated in the Forum Boarium, Rome - the city’s oldest surviving marble temple, dating to the 2nd century BCE. Circular in plan, the temple is characterised by its ring of fluted Corinthian columns, central brickwork cella, and tiled dome, all rendered in these cast bronze reductions.
c1850 with sharply defined architectural features, particularly in the Corinthian capitals and domed roof. It is mounted on an elegant Siena marble base, richly veined in warm ochre tones. The overall execution suggests a Roman workshop producing for the early Grand Tour market, when refinement and fidelity to antiquity were especially prized.
