A Neoclassical Carved Urn Panel, in the Manner of Robert Adam
English, circa 1770–1790
An elegant and finely carved low-relief panel depicting a classical urn, carved in softwood, likely pine and mounted against a richly grained oak ground. The urn; lidded and twin-handled, adorned with a pierced gadrooned neck and a lower body encircled by stylised anthemion leaves, motifs emblematic of the neoclassical language of Robert Adam in the latter half of the 18th century
Likely to have formed part of a decorative frieze or overdoor scheme, typical of Adam’s architectural vision. Its balance and ornamental restraint embody the classical revival taste of the late 18th century.
The reverse of the panel reveals deep hand-chisel marks and a richly oxidised surface.
