A 19th-Century Grand Tour Bronze Bust of Lucius Verus
Italian, circa 1870
A very fine cast bronze bust of Lucius Verus, the co-emperor of Rome and adoptive brother of Marcus Aurelius, rendered in the distinctive manner of 2nd-century imperial portraiture. The emperor is depicted with deeply drilled curls and a full beard, his gaze set in a stern, idealised expression typical of Antonine-era sculpture. The detailing in the hair and facial features is especially crisp.
Mounted on a tapered integral socle and raised on a square bronze base.
Signed “Luciuse” to the base.
27cm
