The Triumphal Entry of Alexander into Babylon
A large plaster frieze after Bertel Thorvaldsen’s celebrated marble original, housed at the Thorvaldsens Museum, Copenhagen.
Depicting Alexander the Great at the height of his conquests, captures the Macedonian cavalry triumphantly entering Babylon. Commissioned for Napoleon’s visit to Rome, an event that never materialised, the frieze cemented Thorvaldsen’s reputation as one of the leading sculptors of his time. A version was later installed at Christiansborg Palace but suffered severe fire damage in 1884, with only partial restoration.
Thorvaldsen’s design, spanning 35 metres in its original form, remains one of the great triumphal processions in neoclassical sculpture
